The original standard for floppy drives (designed by Shugart) allowed for up to four floppy drives to be connected to one controller. The controller would indicate which drive it wanted to communicate with by activating a Drive Select signal on one of four wires (typically labelled DS* or S*), then activate the Motor On signal to spin up the drive. When installing a floppy drive, you would be expected to set the jumpers correctly for the intended drive number, and several other parameters.
What IBM cleverly did was get rid of the need to set jumpers on the drives by swapping some of the wires in the floppy drive cable instead. All drives for IBM-compatible systems are shipped from the factory jumpered as drive 1 (B:), but a twist in the cable swaps wires 10 to 16 (seven wires) around for one drive, which swaps the Drive Select and Motor Enable signals. The net result of this is that the drive you plug in after the twist will respond to DS0 signals (as drive A:) and the drive before the twist will respond to the DS1 signals (as drive B:).
Gotek Floppy Emulator Jumper Settings
If anyone wants to know, I successfully installed one of these in my Yamaha Clavinova CVP-103. I posted all the details on firmware, jumpers, model numbers etc on the HxC gotek forum so they could update their compatibility list, but they just up and deleted my whole post. whatever.
A final note: In most cases except when connecting to an IBM PC,FlashFloppy requires a straight floppy cable with no 'twist' betweenthe connectors. If you do use a twisted cable, you should jumper MOinstead of S0. The exception is the one case that the twist wasdesigned for: connecting FlashFloppy as Drive A to an IBM PC orcompatible.
Replacing an external drive depends on the enclosure or cable beingused. Amiga external drive enclosures usually include the circuitry toallow the Amiga to identify the presence of the drive. In this casethe Gotek with S0 jumper is usually a straight swap for the old floppydrive. If using a passive cable such as this Ebay itemthen be aware that this identification circuitry is missing, but forarcane reasons identification will typically happen to work as long asthe Gotek has an image mounted when the Amiga boots. If you are havingproblems with your drive being identified, seeDrive Identification.
For most machines the default Shugart interface is correct (jumperonly at position S0 at rear of Gotek). Internal pinout varies betweenPC-98 machines but many use a 26-pin laptop floppy driveconnector. Appropriate adapters can be sourced from eBay or wireddirectly as follows:
Note that all interfaces which use the default Q-Jump Toolkit IIversion of the FORMAT command fail to determine the correct number ofsides on in a floppy image and hence format single sided, giving 720sectors rather than the expected 1440. However, if a pre-formattedimage generated by dumping a real floppy or from an emulator is usedthen everything works. This is due to a trick used by the command todetermine the number of sides only working on real hardware, or whenusing the HFE image format.
So now to my enhancements. My first plan is to allow the drive to be used as C or D, as well as A or B. (My Video Genie has two real floppy drives, A and B, and it would be good to be able to use the floppy emulator as a C drive alongside the real drives to copy files.)
Nalbantov Electronics manifacture over 600 types of USB floppy drive emulators for home and industrial use. Depending on your equipment, the settings of the emulator may vary: hardware, firmware, software, connection type, emulator jumper and settings.
Every N-Drive USB floppy emulator is sold with all necessary components, so you can install it to your equipment and have it work immediately. The Package includes: N-Drive floppy emulator, configured for your equipment; USB flash memory, formatted and configured with virtual floppies; software with PC (Windows) and Apple (MAC OS) support; assembly components. The optional components depending on your equipment are: suitable connectors; suitable ribbon cables; operating system; boot disk; specific virtual image files and more.
For industrial purposes, we produce N-Drive Industrial USB floppy emulators. They support huge list of industrial CNC machines and controllers. N-Drive Industrial floppy emulators are used 24/7 in harsh industrial environments all over the world from many years without failures.
N-Drive 100 is a basic model floppy emulator. It has all the features you need to replace your floppy disk drive. Instead of floppy disks, you can use a flash drive. You can store up to 100 floppy disks in a single USB flash drive.
N-Drive 1000 floppy emulator increases 10 times the ability to store information in one flash drive. You can store up to 1000 floppy disks in a single USB flash drive! An additional benefit is that it is able to support not only PC but also MAC.
N-Drive eXtreme is a floppy emulator with much more convenient graphical OLED display, that lists names. This way you will see the names of your favorite floppies, written on the emulator screen. In addition, the N-Drive eXtreme is equipped with a rotary selector to help you select the right content faster. It also supports PC and MAC.
Some devices are manufactured with thinner floppy disk drives. For these purposes, we have developed the N-Drive Slim floppy emulator. It has the same features as the N-Drive 1000, but it is much thinner to fit like a glove.
Hi everyone,I am new to this forum and I find it very interesting.I purchased a Gotek floppy drive emulator and I want to use it on a Pentium pc with Ms-Dos 5.0 installed. I would now like to install Ms-Dos 6.22, with the help of Gotek, because my original floppies are unfortunately unreadable for reasons of degradation of the disk surface.I used the USB_Floppy_Emulator_1.40i program to create the 100 partitions of 1.39MB each named 000, 001, 002, 003 ... etc on a usb pen.My question is this: do I have to copy the .img of original floppies file inside the partitions, or can I copy the contents of the original dos 6.22 floppies and run the installation with setup.exe like a normal floppy?I hope I have clearly explained the question and I thank the forum in advance for your kind replie. Tony.
Sorry I do not have clue about using a Gotek to install DOS from floppy but would guess you need to extract each IMG (or put contents of each floppy) in one bigger partition, because DOS setup expects to access each disk named in order. I use real floppy drives on anything XT thru Slot1 and never have a problem installing DOS. Maybe someone else can give better info but there are limits what a floppy emulator can do afaik...
However, that's no issue in case you can transfer files with your Pentium. You can use programs like QCopy v4 or Disc Copy Fast on DOS to write *. IMG/*.IMA images back to a real floppy drive.Or a floppy emulator
Installed emulator in a K2000. Inserted MO and S0 jumpers. Could not get the software that came with the drive to work under Windows 7, 64 bit (tried running in compatibility mode, no luck). Used the software from this link: -floppy-emulation-download.html . Select version 1.40i. Works but will only do up to 100 virtual floppy drives.
hi @solidstatecollectiveI've just read your instructions for replacement of floppy drive with a emulator, are you sure that it works on a kurzweil k2600x?I've one.thanks,DAniele
wow, great tutorial!! i am buying a k2000 with broken floppy and am buying the gotek to replace floppy. so am i understanding right- all you have to do it press the two buttons on power up after install to format the whole 100 spaces on the usbflash? and then i can create and store new objects etc on each image? lets say i buy a k2000 patch cdrom on ebay, how do i get those sounds onto the usb drive? thanks for any info..
Hi! Very many thanks for your great work! Definitely the best description how to replace the floppy drive in K2000. I took your link for bying an emulator and I got one, but this is a updated version, so you can save the floppys on the emulator himself. Now to my problem. You said the software is a pain, it is, but it works. Only my Synth is searching for a disc, if I want to load from usb flash drive or emulator. I get the message: "Please insert a disk!" I think this is a problem of the jumpers (they are driving me cracy). Perhaps someone had got the same problem and there is a solution. If you want, I can make an instruction for this crazy software to use, because I've spent a lot of time with it. Thanks to all, who take part on this blog and are helping many musicians.
Hi every body, I try to install this emulator on my K2000 and it doesn't work correctly.I have tested 3 solutions (first jumper on MO and JA, second MO and SO, third MO, JA and J5) and for these 3 configurations the emulator initialize the cycle with the usb thumb correctly but at end (when it come back to "000") i can't change the file, it still stay at "000" and the k2000 said "insert a floppy";My K2000 has 3.18 OS !!! What are your OS please? So Does someone had got the same problem and have a solution?Thank's for your helpRegardsMike
my k2000 has 3.01J OS, it was solved with third configuration (MO, JA AND J5) ,,BEFORE I had check los jumpers del floppy disc and it has three jumpers, big trouble ,initially I tried with one jumper so k2000 said "insert a floppy "...then "problem mounting disc" and finally I got it worked ....GOOD LUCK
Hi, In fact, at end i solve my problem. The floppy connector has to be mount at the opposite of the notch and with only MO and JA jumper the Gotek run correctly. I have detected that because the LED of the Gotek was always lighted. RegardsMike
Some tips for K2000R/RS. When taking out floppy/hard drive both are covered by a metal box, remove the hard drive ribbon and power first so you have space to work. The hard drive will stay put and screwed inside the box, this is located above the floppy. Only unscrew the 2-4 screws in the area that mounts on the metal box that holds the hard and floppy drives to the bottom of the chasis. These have washers on them. (mine only had two screws securing the metal box). Then pull this up and take out the floppy power and ribbon connectors. If you buy the Gotek device listed on this website, you must put the JUMPER ON S0!!!!!!!!!!!!!! S0 I repeat, you only have one block/jumper to use with the one from amazon. This will work, then do the boot up holding the two buttons on the drive down for a few seconds until it starts cycling numbers. Your USB stick is now formatted for the floppy emulator. Then you need software to show all your one hundred or 1000 floppy drives depending on what your USB stick storage was. Once again this should be updated as amazon only sells this will one jumper block, it has to go on S0 to work. It is more of a pain for the k2000R as far as getting the floppy drive out. When putting it back together, you may need to tape the Gotek drive in place where the screws line up (not a perfect match screw wise) Remember it should stick out a bit from the metal enclosure because of the design on the front. 2ff7e9595c
